Hybrid Warfare in the 21st century: A new threath

Published on 26 March 2025 at 10:44

In today's world, warfare is no longer confined to traditional battlefields. We have entered an era of hybrid warfare, a complex and insidious strategy that combines conventional military tactics with non-military methods to achieve political objectives. This form of warfare exploits the vulnerabilities of modern societies, sows confusion, and makes it difficult to identify the aggressor.

What is Hybrid Warfare?

Hybrid warfare is a blend of:

Conventional military forces: Traditional armies, navies, and air forces.

Irregular forces: Insurgents, terrorists, and other non-state actors.

Cyber warfare: Hacking, disinformation campaigns, and disruption of critical infrastructure.

Propaganda and disinformation: Manipulation of public opinion through fake news and propaganda.

Economic pressure: The use of economic sanctions and other measures to destabilize a state.

Characteristics of Hybrid Warfare

Ambiguity: The attacker conceals their identity and involvement.

Speed and surprise: Attacks are often rapid and unexpected, leaving little time to react.

Exploitation of vulnerabilities: The attacker targets weaknesses in the opponent's systems, infrastructure, and society.

Psychological manipulation: The goal is to undermine the opponent's morale, create fear and confusion, and polarize public opinion.

Examples of Hybrid Warfare

Russia's annexation of Crimea in 2014: Russia used a combination of military forces, local militias, propaganda, and cyberattacks to annex the Crimean Peninsula from Ukraine.

The rise of ISIL: ISIL used terrorism, propaganda, and cyber warfare to recruit fighters and spread its ideology.

Russia's actions in Svalbard: As reported by Illia Kabachynskyi, Russia is currently employing a combination of rhetoric and strategic positioning in the Svalbard archipelago. This includes pushing to rename the region and advocating for the establishment of military facilities, despite treaty prohibitions. These actions demonstrate Russia's use of political maneuvering and the exploitation of historical ties, combined with the threat of military force, to assert its influence in this strategically important Arctic region.

Hybrid Warfare in the Arctic

The Arctic is a region of growing importance due to climate change, natural resources, and its strategic location. Increasing tensions between major powers have led to increased military activity in the region, and hybrid warfare is a likely strategy in any potential conflict. The situation in Svalbard, as outlined by Illia Kabachynskyi, is a clear example of this.

In my spy thriller, "Operation Polaris 2025," I explore the theme of hybrid warfare in the Arctic. I depict how a conflict in this region might unfold, with the use of unconventional methods and hidden agendas.

How to Defend Against Hybrid Warfare

Defending against hybrid warfare requires a holistic approach that involves:

Strengthening critical infrastructure: Protecting computer systems, communication networks, and other vital resources.

Countering disinformation: Increasing media literacy and cooperation between governments, media, and technology companies to expose fake news and propaganda.

Strengthening societal resilience: Promoting social cohesion, trust in government, and the ability to handle crises.

International cooperation: Collaboration between states to share information, develop common strategies, and take action against aggressors.

Hybrid warfare is a complex and challenging threat that requires increased awareness and action. By understanding this form of warfare and implementing effective measures, we can protect ourselves and our societies.

Den type krigføring som beskrives virker veldig invanderende, og er ment for å skape splid, utrygghet og frykt blant mennesker... Å det er jo selvfølgelig hensikten... Spørsmålet mitt er : hvilke kilder er trygge, og til å stole på?
